Extended Degrees

What are they?

An Extended Degree/Extended Foundation Degree is a degree programme that includes a year of study , which will enhance students' underpinning knowledge and skills before progression onto more specialist studies in the later years of the course. An Extended Degree/Foundation Degree is ideal for students' with few, or no, formal qualifications who are returning to education.  It is also a good option for students who do not have the required subjects/grades at A-level (or equivalent) to be able to progress onto a Degree/Foundation Degree programme.

Honours degrees have an academic focus while Foundation degrees contain a large element of work-based learning.

What do they cost?
Tuition fees vary depending on the university or college you decide to study at. The fee for the first year of the course is significantly lower than for the remaining years. Eligible students should have access to the standard government financial support package (i.e. loans and grants) throughout the course but are advised to confirm this with their Local Authority prior to enrolment. Contact the University or College direct for more information about fees and financial support for Extended Degrees.

What qualifications do I need to apply?

You do not usually need any formal qualifications but you do need to be committed to studying at this level.

How long will it take?

If you decide to study full-time, an Extended Foundation degree will take three years to complete and an Extended Honours degree four years.

If you decide to study part-time it will take longer to complete the course.  Part-time study is available on most courses (see table opposite). Contact the university or college for more details about this.

What qualification will I get?

Depending on which course you choose, you will get a Higher Education Diploma, a BA Honours Degree, a BSc Honours Degree or a Foundation Degree. The nursing programme will also give you professional registration as a nurse. With Foundation Degrees, there is also the option of studying a one year ‘top-up’ at the end of the course to be awarded an Honours Degree.

Where can I study?

These courses are available across York. The Foundation Year may be delivered at a different university or college to the remainder of the course.

Frequently Asked Questions about Extended Degrees

Can I change degree course part way through?

There is no guarantee this would be possible. It would depend which course you wanted to change from and to and would be at the discretion of the university or college concerned.

Can I study part-time?

Part time study is available on most courses (see Extended Degrees in York). If you opt to study part-time it will take you longer to complete the course. Contact the university or college for more details about this (see Further Information).

Is childcare available?

All of the universities and colleges in York have nurseries on campus. The contact telephone numbers for these childcare facilities are as follows:

Askham Bryan College – 01904 709062

The University of York – 01904 433737

York College – 01904 770344

York St John University – 01904 654792

You will be responsible for any childcare costs. However, a Childcare Grant is available to full time students who have dependent children in registered or approved childcare. Your entitlement to this grant is dependent on your household income.

The Childcare Grant pays for up to 85% of your actual childcare costs (up to a certain maximum amount) throughout the academic year.

If it would be more convenient for you to use a childcare facility in a certain part of the city, the York Children's Information Service provides a list of all registered childcare providers in the area.  Click here for more information or
telephone: 01904 554628.

I’m a mature student without any qualifications – could I study for an Extended Degree?

Yes. You do not always need any formal qualifications to study for an Extended Degree course, though you will need to check the entry requirements with the institution delivering the course (see Further Information for contact details). The study skills modules incorporated into the first year of study will be of particular benefit to mature students who are returning to education.

If I don’t get the A-level grades I need for my chosen degree course, would I be accepted onto the Extended Degree in that subject?

Possibly. Learners who have completed qualifications but have failed to obtain the required grades for the degree programme, are eligible to put themselves forward for the Extended Degree course.

I studied languages at A-level but have now changed my mind and would like to study for a degree in physics, could I apply for an Extended Degree in this subject?

Yes. Learners who have achieved qualifications, but in subjects not directly related to the degree they wish to pursue, can apply for an Extended Degree in their chosen subject.

When would I start the course?

The Extended Degree courses advertised here (see Extended Degrees in York) start at the beginning of each academic year –  (September/ October). Each year you will finish studying in May/June and, providing you have successfully completed the year, you will resume your studies again in September/ October.

You are advised to contact the university/college where you will be studying for exact start and finish dates as these will vary slightly depending on which course and where you are studying. Please note that the nursing programmes have a different timetable.

More Extended Degree courses are planned to start in September/ October 2008. Check back here for further details.

Are the only Extended Degree programmes available those listed in the table (see Extended Degrees in York)?

Yes, although for the Physics and Electronic Engineering courses offered at the University of York it may be possible to study other programmes available in these departments i.e. Physics and Philosophy, Electronic and Communication Engineering. You are advised to contact the institution for more details about this.

How are Extended Degrees taught?

The courses are delivered using a range of teaching techniques including; practical work, seminars, lectures and workshops. The nursing programmes also have a substantial practice element (50% of the course).
