'Is Higher Education for me?'
A new course is starting called 'Is Higher Education for me?'. Below are some details about the course. If you would like to know more about the course contact us. 

What is it?                                                                                   
The course is designed to prepare people for Higher Education study. It has been developed by the four Higher Education providers in York:

  • Askham Bryan College
  • The University of York
  • York College
  • York St John University

The course is made up of the following two accredited modules:

Module 1 – ‘Is Higher Education for me?’. This module will provide you with all the relevant information you need to make an informed decision about Higher Education.

Module 2 – Study Skills.  This module will teach you the study skills (i.e. essay writing, using a library, referencing) you require to successfully enter Higher Education.

You don’t have to study both modules. So, for instance, if after completing the first module you decide that Higher Education is not for you, then you will not be obliged to continue with the second module. Likewise, if you have already decided on Higher Education and have applied for a degree programme you can just enrol for the Study Skills module.

Who is the course for?

Anyone considering taking a Higher Education course.

What qualifications do I need to study the course?

None. Just an interest in learning at Higher Education level.

 

How much will it cost?

The course is FREE and all learning materials will be provided.

 

How long does the course take?

Twelve weeks (six weeks for each module). There will be a two hour session each week.

 

Where and when will the course be taught?

At Future Prospects in York and at various times (both evenings and during the day).

There are some Is HE for Me? courses starting soon, the details of which are below:

Module 1: Tuesday evenings (5 - 7pm) Starting 15th April (for 6 weeks)
Module 2: Tuesday evenings (5 - 7pm) Starting 3rd June (for 6 weeks)

These courses will take place at Future Prospects on Swinegate in the centre of York.
 

What happens when I complete the course?

You will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement.
 

Depending on your individual circumstances and prior qualifications and experience, after completing this course, you may be able to progress onto a HNC/D, Foundation Degree or Honours Degree. Alternatively progression onto Extended Degrees, Access Courses or other programmes will be available.

 

A Higher Education adviser will be able to help you consider the different options available.
