Types of Accommodation
Wherever you decide to study you will have a choice of where to live and will need to consider carefully which option will best suit your needs. The main types of accommodation students opt for are outlined below.

Halls of residence Halls of residence are buildings, typically on the college or university site, where lots of full-time students live. Click here for more information on the halls of residence in York.

Private accommodation Many students choose to live in rented accommodation close to their place of study. You could either live alone or in a house share. For more information about living in private rented accommodation click here.

Staying at home With the increased costs associated with studying in Higher Education (HE), more and more students are opting to live at home, study locally and save money. By selecting this option you will be able to enjoy luxuries such as home cooking and having your laundry done. However, you will be less independent and may find it harder to enjoy a full student lifestyle. If you are a mature student with work or family commitments this is likely to be the only option you can consider and you will find many others in the same situation.

Host families Students at York College have the option of living with a family/house owner. Students can decide whether they want a breakfast and evening meal provided or would rather cater for themselves. For further details of this option click here.

Short stay accommodation There may be occasions when you need to find somewhere in the York area to accommodate yourself, a family member, or a friend for a short period of time.

It may be that you need to return to York before your student accommodation is ready or family or friends may require somewhere to stay when they come and visit. For more information about short stay accommodation in the York area click here.
