Finding Work

Finding Work

When to look
Don’t leave finding work until the last minute. Try to plan ahead and find work before you start the academic year, or at the latest in your first few weeks of term.

Where to look - institutions
All of the institutions in York have people who can help and advise you about finding work. Your college or university’s student support department will be able to direct you to the appropriate person.

The University of York and York St John University provide job shops linking students with local employers offering part-time or vacation work. You are able to search for part-time vacancies without registering and so do not need to belong to either of these institutions. Click the appropriate link to access these sites.

Higher York is currently offering the opportunity for current students at Askham Bryan College, the University of York, York College and York St John University to work as Higher York Student Ambassadors.

Higher York Student Ambassadors will need to be able to reflect on and provide information about their student experience as well as that of others.

They will also be required to promote studying at a Higher York institution and will need to act as role models to potential York higher education students.

Higher York Student Ambassadors will be able to get involved in a variety of activities with some flexibility, to enable students with particular interests to contribute in these areas. Possible activities include: organising and running student focus groups; talking to potential students at recruitment events and developing marketing materials (including writing for the Higher York website).

Applicants must have strong communication, IT (particularly word processing) and time management skills, knowledge around higher education and widening participation and be willing to undertake administrative duties when required. You should also be motivated, dedicated and enthusiastic about promoting and improving the student experience.

The hours are flexible (approximately 4 hours per week) and we are particularly keen to hear from students from non-traditional groups, i.e. mature students, part-time students or students on vocational/work based programmes. We are looking to recruit a cross section of students from across the four institutions.

For further details about the vacancy, an application form and job description please contact the Higher York office on 01904 876350 or email c.thomas@yorksj.ac.uk.

We will next be recruiting for Higher York Student Ambassadors in November 2008. Check back here for more details.
