Safety information on buses and trains
When you are using public transport remember the following advice to help you stay safe:
  • Check departure times, especially of last buses and trains.
  • Always wait for a train in a well-lit place near other people if possible. If this isn’t possible sit near an alarm (there will be one on every platform).
  • Avoid empty carriages. Try to sit near the driver or guard or in a busy carriage.
  • Have your pass or correct change in your hand so that your purse/wallet is out of sight.
  • If you feel threatened when travelling, either move seats, carriages or get off at the next stop. Make as much noise as possible to attract the attention of the guard or driver. Sound the emergency alarm. Use the telephone at the “Help Points” on train platforms which will connect you immediately to the British Transport Police or station staff.
  • Ask someone to meet you if you are going to be alone at night when you arrive at your destination.
