Walking safely around York
When you are out walking, especially if you are alone, follow this advice for students:
  • Avoid quiet or badly lit alleyways, subways or deserted car parks.

  • If a vehicle pulls up next to you, turn and walk in the opposite direction - it will take a car longer to turn round than it will take you.

  • Walk facing oncoming traffic to avoid kerb crawlers.

  • Keep your mind on your surroundings – you will not hear trouble approaching if you are listening to music using headphones.

  • If you think you are being followed keep moving towards the nearest public place, crossing and re-crossing the road. Phone home or the police as soon as you do get to a public place.
